Four practical differences from a shared departure.
A shared van collects six to ten guests across the island before it starts. A private one collects you. On a five-hour afternoon that difference is frequently a full hour.
Stay longer at the cellar you like, skip the gift shop, add a village stop. On a shared tour the schedule is fixed by the slowest party in the van.
Most private tours are quoted for the booking, not the person — so the per-head cost falls sharply with each traveller you add. For four people it often undercuts the shared rate.
Several private operators will add a sommelier for the tastings. On a private booking that person is talking to your group only, which is the version worth paying for.

Private Santorini wine tours sit at the top of every search result sorted by price, and most people scroll straight past them. That is usually a mistake, because the number in the listing is not comparable to the number beside a shared tour.
A shared three-winery tasting is priced per head: two people pay twice, four people pay four times. A private tour is normally priced for the booking — one vehicle, one guide, whoever is in it.
The catalogue on this site includes private options at figures that look alarming next to a $145 shared seat, until you notice they are quoted per group of up to two, four, seven or thirteen. Once you divide, a private car for four frequently lands within a few dollars of four shared seats — and buys you an afternoon without a pickup loop.
Always check the price unit before comparing. It is stated on every GetYourGuide listing, and it is the single most misread field in the category.
The hour you get back. A shared van collects across Fira, Imerovigli, Oia, Kamari and Perissa before the tour begins, and returns everyone afterwards. If you are at the wrong end of that loop it can cost you an hour each way. A private tour starts at your door.
Control of the route. Three cellars is the standard, but on a private booking you can stay longer at the one you like, add a village, or ask for a specific estate. The private wineries tour opens at Art Space — a 19th-century canava carved into volcanic rock that doubles as an art museum — and at 4.99 across its reviews it is the highest-rated tour in this catalogue.
Attention. Ten glasses is a lot of information. On a shared tour the guide divides it among ten people; on a private one they do not.
