Oia Is Where the Sunset Is, Not Where the Wine Is

The single most useful thing to understand if you have booked a hotel at the northern tip.

Oia is the postcard, and it is also the most awkward base on Santorini for a wine tour. Not badly awkward — the island is 18 kilometres end to end — but awkward enough that it changes which tour is the right one.

Where the wineries actually are

Santorini’s vineyards and cellars cluster through the island’s centre and south: Pyrgos, Megalochori, Exo Gonia, Episkopi, and the rim road down towards Athinios. Domaine Sigalas, in Baxedes just below Oia, is the one significant estate at the northern end. Everything else — Santo Wines, Venetsanos, Estate Argyros, Gaia, Art Space, Hatzidakis, the Koutsoyannopoulos museum — is a 20 to 40 minute drive south of you.

This is not a problem, but it is a fact worth pricing in. A pickup in Oia adds travel at both ends of the afternoon, and on a shared tour you are also waiting while the van collects everyone else.

Two different tours both call themselves “Oia”

The listings blur a real distinction:

Tours that FINISH in Oia are built around the sunset at the village.
